Hurdling

Hurdlers

Hurdling is a track and field event which is run on the track in the 100, 110 or 400 m and which would have 10 hurdles. Hurdles are metal structures that hold a right-angled wooden bar. They will fall over if a runner hits them without causing any damages to the athlete and without invalidating the race. Hurdles are set at precisely measured distances as not to interrupt the rhythm of the running and to allow the athlete to run over the obstacles always using the same leg. The athlete starts out of starting blocks, he/she runs in his/her lane and steps over the obstacle frontally. In order to «pass over» (this is the technical term) the hurdle, and not simply jump over it, the athlete should adjust his/her hips to raise them over the hurdles. He/she should also keep the lead leg fairly straight.
