The sport of athletics is a collection of sporting events that best represents the path from fundamental movement skills to their specialization. For this reason, it is one of the oldest human sport events (athletics is the basis of the first Olympic Games played at Olympia in 776 BC).

Athletics is divided into:

  • Track and field, that includes running, race walking, jumping, throwing and combined events (men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon);
  • Weight lifting and wrestling, that includes all kinds of wrestling, weightlifting and boxing.

Track and field events are held in the track and field stadium, except for marathon and cross-country. The regulatory running track has an overall length of 400 m to the inner edge (or “rope”) and it is divided into lanes (6 or 8) large from 1.22 to 1.25 m each.
