Disabled people

For the disabled people practicing sport is one of the key ways to have a good relationship with themselves and with others and to enhance their energy, in order to grow individually and socially. Indeed, the «sport therapy» involves the physical, mental and social aspect; transforming movement into fun is essential to get in contact with one’s own body and the desire to compete and to participate turns on the desire for life and hope. This is why sport for the disabled people aims at achieving three objectives:
- physical and psychological fitness;
- the training necessary to move (muscles are stimulated, coordination is improved, resistance to strain is enhanced);
- social interaction and integration.
Recent training experiences have shown that the learning process is the same for children with and without disabilities: just the speed is different. Certainly, for those with psychomotor deficiencies the core work is focused on improving coordination, balance, rhythm and the sense of orientation, and all that takes time, but progress is regular and it brings great satisfaction. Physical activity at school, then, offers to the disabled people the chance to fight against all those prejudices that lead to consider them more for who they appear to be, than for who they are, so that future barriers will be demolished.
