Dependence on tobacco causes several damages. Smokers have greater risk of developing lung cancer than non-smokers. Cardiovascular system and respiratory system may be damaged gravely and permanently. Smoking is responsible for close to 90% of lung cancer cases, as well as ischemic heart diseases, pulmonary emphysemas and chronic bronchitis. Nicotine is the main cause of physical addiction and it acts as both a stimulant and a sedative. The carbon monoxide is a gas released from the combustion of tobacco and it can lead to serious cardiovascular diseases. When tobacco smoke cools, it forms tar that sticks to the lining of the lungs and it is made up of substances that may cause cancer.
