Gestures

Gestures are bodily expressions that accompany words, making them more effective. Gestures may be conscious, that are intentional movements, or unconscious, that are activated independently of our will and showing how we really feel at that precise moment. There are different types of gestures, such as expressive (showing and transmitting emotions through facial expression muscles), symbolic (they vary according to culture and take on different meanings depending on the individual’s place of belonging) and technical or coded. This latter type of gesture represents a way of communicating that finds applications in various sports or special sectors (for example between traffic officers), and it is used to send a specific message or to facilitate information. Among the coded gestures there are also referee signals, which are specific to each sport and are designed to communicate to the players and to the public the necessary measures.
