Trekking (or hiking) is a non-competitive sport that involves walking along footpaths, mule tracks, routes of varying length in the outdoors. Uphill, the hiker should proceed by small steps, placing the foot evenly and consistently. Downhill it is important to place the heel first, and then the tip of the foot. In particular, walking boots should have non-slip rubber soles, they should be of at least one size bigger than the usual size and they should be worn with sponge socks. It is necessary to carry a large backpack and to wear water-proof breathable clothing allowing the legs to move easily. It is essential to always carry a heavy sweater or jacket for possible stops in the cold or to shelter from any sudden drops in temperature, as well as an anorak with nylon overpants, or a rain poncho to shield against the rain. You should always put on sunscreen to protect yourself in the sun and wearing a hat and good quality sunglasses. Finally, remember to always carry food and water, to be consumed frequently and in smaller quantities, and to avoid sodas and alcohol.
