Resistance

Resistance is the motor skill helping muscular resistance to fatigue, tolerating medium- and long-duration efforts. It depends on the proper function of the cardiovascular system and respiratory system, which should be able to trigger physiological adaptation processes, as the heart has to send more blood to the muscles in the shortest possible time. In motor activities, there are two types of resistance:
- overall strength, that is the ability to endure a prolonged effort regardless of the type of activity; any exercise programs providing regular practice and activity over long distances with aerobic pace (see muscular energy) are appropriate to train this type of resistance, such as slow run at constant speed;
- specific resistance, which every athlete develops in relation to his/her speciality; it is determined by the integration of aerobic and anaerobic alactic mechanisms; a specific strength training exercise is carried out at various speeds and it consists in a medium-long path with speed changes during which the pace increases gradually.
